American Songwriter friends,

I blew it. I’m sorry.

Dean told me the time we were meeting. I double and triple checked because I was excited to spend time with you all.

But I got the day wrong.

Still, as a small peace offering, I wanted to share something that’s been helpful to me.

Some of you are just getting started in your songwriting life. Others are further along. Either way, Resistance—with a capital R, as Steven Pressfield writes in The War of Art—is a constant companion.

Sometimes it’s your inner critic telling you you’re pathetic. Sometimes it’s the babysitter canceling. Sometimes it’s your father’s voice reminding you to be practical.

My wife’s “fruit tray” routine is something I still practice to this day.

Even this morning.

I wrote about this years ago in my book On Songwriting.

I’m sharing that chapter with you here in case it helps.

I’ll see you out there (hopefully on the right day next time!),

Aaron Espe

From the chapter “Make It Easy,” learn my wife’s FRUIT TRAY ROUTINE to help you remove resistance when you’re sitting down to write.
