AMA: “What’s a good-quality guitar for my child? But I don’t want to spend too much, because I’m not sure he’s going to stick with it.” – Tara
Hi Tara,
You’re definitely not alone – I get some form of this question a lot. With all the brands and models out there, it can be overwhelming, especially if you’re on a budget.
So, I’ve put together a shortlist of my top two picks for parents with a budget under $250. These guitars not only sound great but are also easy to play, making them perfect for beginners. Your child will have a much easier time learning on an instrument that is comfortable and sounds good.
Two Great Guitars for Kids Under $250
If your child is not fully grown or close to it, I recommend the Yamaha JR1 3/4-size Dreadnought. This guitar is designed to fit smaller hands and bodies, which makes it easier for children to hold and play.
You can purchase it online here (I’m not getting paid to say this), and hear it being played in this video:
If your child is fully grown or close to it, I recommend the Yamaha FG800 Dreadnought. This guitar has a full-size body and produces a rich, warm sound that is perfect for both beginners and more advanced players.
You can purchase it online here (again, not getting paid to say this).

Best of luck with your search, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!
