I remember starting this one with a guitar part and filling in the melody with gibberish words—just vowel sounds and a cadence that felt right. In other words, I had no idea what the song would be about, and I didn’t care. I was painting. Enjoying the process of discovery.
But I also know I was influenced by the Enneagram book The Road Back to You, which I read during the pandemic and, I’m pretty sure, around the same time I started working on this song.
I have a hard time with songs written this way because I know they’ll be difficult to pull off live. Even though I rarely tour these days, I still think about that. How will this work with just a guitar without putting everyone to sleep? But, like other songs I’ve released, that’s a bridge to cross if and when we get there.
Something I think you might enjoy trying is being wordy. I know we’re often trying to trim, trim, trim and become zen masters of poetry. But there’s also a freedom in writing a song the way you’d talk to a friend. I think I was trying to do that here. Almost as if you’re entering a conversation midway through and overhearing someone say:
“Well, one thing I know is I don’t know that much about anything, really.”
That’s about the longest way ever to say, “I don’t know.”
All for now.
I’ll see you out there,
Love,
Aaron
