Notes on Writing “All in My Head”

I don’t think this is a very good song. In terms of craft, anyway. It’s not the kind of song people will cover. It’s cryptic and vague, and the chorus isn’t particularly novel.

So why record it?

I don’t know.

It has a feeling I like.

As much as I talk about songwriting and encourage you to experiment, pay attention to craft, and learn some of the rules, I hope the main thing you hear from me is this: follow your intuition.

Thank goodness you can’t manufacture that. It’s unique to your life and all of your experiences, for better or worse. It’s the X factor no one else can give you. You have to look inward and trust yourself.

And as objectively flawed as this song may be (I’m being a little harsh, but I can take it), my intuition keeps saying, There’s something here. Go ahead and release it, Espe. It’s going to be okay.

It might not be for the masses. But it just might be for someone, even if that someone is only you.

I’ll see you out there.
