AMA: “How’s the hand healing?”

How’s the hand healing? How has physical therapy been? How are you feeling emotionally?

(A lot of you have asked versions of this question, thank you!)

Physical therapy… I’m getting there! Little by little. I’m basically doing the same activities as two-year olds. My PT station looks like something out of Sesame Street. The goal is to gain full motion back. I’m not there yet, but I’m hopeful.

They call this thing the “sandbox.” It’s warm cornmeal that flies around in an enclosed case. I warm up my hand in here before doing exercises.

How am I doing emotionally? Well, I’m in the stage where the sexiness/attention/adrenalin of the injury has long gone and now it’s just the boring part of doing the work.

It’s been hard not being able to do stuff like cut the grass or play catch with the boys. I still try, just can’t use a mitt. My son Silas wants to work on his pitching and I’m just not able to catch fast throws. (Although, I did try his glove—he’s a lefty—and tried to catch some with my good hand. I was pretty bad.) So, it’s stuff like that. Little things that add up.

I’m trying not to stress about guitar, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about how well I’ll be able to play or get back to the level I was at. As you can see in the video below, my fine motor skills have a ways to go!

I try to focus on the positive and the things I can control. I have a timer on my phone that goes off every two hours. That’s when I do my finger exercises in this pic:

Doc said my patience will be tested and I’m thankful he said that from the beginning so my expectations haven’t been unrealistic. I feel pretty good about where I’m at.

All in all, things are going well and I’m thankful. Also, I’m painting a lot more so that’s good!

Love,
Aaron
